The Digestive System Explained for Students
What is the Digestive System?
The digestive system is a group of organs that work together to break down food into nutrients your body can use for energy, growth, and repair. It's essentially a long tube (about 9 meters or 30 feet in adults!) that runs from your mouth to your anus.
Every time you eat a sandwich or drink a glass of milk, your digestive system goes to work — breaking the food into smaller and smaller pieces until it's small enough to enter your bloodstream.
Overview: Mechanical vs Chemical Digestion
Digestion happens in two main ways:
Mechanical digestion — Physical breakdown of food into smaller pieces. Think of chewing, churning, and squeezing. This increases the surface area for chemical digestion to work on.
Chemical digestion — Using enzymes and acids to break down food molecules into their building blocks:
- Carbohydrates → simple sugars (glucose)
- Proteins → amino acids
- Fats → fatty acids and glycerol
Both types work together throughout the entire digestive process.
The Journey of Food Through Your Body

1. The Mouth
Digestion begins as soon as food enters your mouth:
- Teeth physically break food into smaller pieces (mechanical digestion)
- Saliva moistens the food and contains the enzyme amylase, which begins breaking down starches into sugars (chemical digestion)
- The tongue shapes the chewed food into a ball called a bolus and pushes it to the back of the throat

2. The Esophagus
The esophagus is a muscular tube (about 25 cm long) that connects the mouth to the stomach.
- When you swallow, a flap called the epiglottis closes over your windpipe to prevent food from entering your lungs
- Peristalsis — rhythmic muscle contractions — pushes the bolus down the esophagus to the stomach
- This is why you can eat upside down (though it's not recommended!)
3. The Stomach
The stomach is a muscular, J-shaped organ that acts like a mixing bowl:
- Muscles in the stomach wall churn and squeeze the food (mechanical digestion)
- Gastric juice is released, containing:
- Hydrochloric acid (HCl) — kills bacteria and creates an acidic environment (pH 1.5–3.5)
- Pepsin — an enzyme that breaks down proteins
- Food is mixed into a thick, soupy liquid called chyme
- Food stays in the stomach for 2–6 hours
The stomach lining produces mucus to protect itself from the acid. Without this protection, the stomach would digest itself!
4. The Small Intestine
Despite its name, the small intestine is the longest part of the digestive system (about 6 meters or 20 feet). This is where most digestion and absorption happen.
It has three sections:
- Duodenum — First 25 cm. Here, bile and pancreatic juice are added to continue chemical digestion
- Jejunum — Middle section. Most nutrient absorption occurs here
- Ileum — Final section. Absorbs remaining nutrients, especially vitamin B12
The inner wall is covered with tiny finger-like projections called villi (and even tinier microvilli), which massively increase the surface area for absorption. If you flattened out all the villi, the small intestine's surface area would be about the size of a tennis court!
Nutrients pass through the villi walls into the bloodstream, which carries them to cells throughout the body. Those cells then use the nutrients through cellular respiration to produce energy.
5. The Large Intestine
The large intestine (colon) is shorter but wider than the small intestine (about 1.5 meters):
- Absorbs water and minerals from the remaining food material
- Contains billions of beneficial bacteria that help break down fiber and produce vitamins (like vitamin K)
- Forms and stores feces (solid waste)
- The rectum stores feces until they're expelled through the anus
The entire journey from mouth to anus takes about 24–72 hours.

Several organs assist digestion without food passing through them directly:
The Liver:
- Produces bile, which breaks down fats into smaller droplets (emulsification)
- Processes nutrients absorbed from the small intestine
- Detoxifies harmful substances
The Gallbladder:
- Stores and concentrates bile
- Releases bile into the duodenum when fats are present
The Pancreas:
- Produces pancreatic juice containing enzymes for digesting carbohydrates, proteins, and fats
- Produces sodium bicarbonate to neutralize stomach acid in the duodenum
- Also produces insulin (for blood sugar regulation)

Common Mistakes Students Make

Thinking digestion only happens in the stomach. Digestion starts in the mouth and continues through the small intestine. The stomach is just one stop on the journey.

Confusing absorption with digestion. Digestion = breaking food down. Absorption = nutrients entering the bloodstream. Most absorption happens in the small intestine, not the stomach.

Calling the small intestine "small." It's called "small" because of its diameter (about 2.5 cm), not its length. It's actually much longer than the large intestine.

Forgetting the role of the liver and pancreas. These organs are crucial to digestion even though food doesn't pass through them directly.

Not understanding how nutrients connect to energy. After absorption, nutrients are used in cellular respiration to produce ATP. The connection between the digestive and circulatory systems is also essential for understanding osmosis.
