What Is the Nervous System?
The nervous system is your body's communication network. It controls everything you do — from thinking and feeling to breathing and moving. Without it, your body wouldn't be able to respond to the world around you.
The nervous system is divided into two main parts:
- Central Nervous System (CNS) — the brain and spinal cord
- Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) — all the nerves that branch out to the rest of your body

The Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
The PNS connects the CNS to the rest of your body. It includes all the nerves that extend from the brain and spinal cord to your limbs, organs, and skin.
The PNS has two divisions:
- Somatic Nervous System — controls voluntary movements like picking up a pen or kicking a ball.
- Autonomic Nervous System — controls involuntary functions like digestion, heart rate, and breathing. This is further divided into:
- Sympathetic (fight-or-flight response)
- Parasympathetic (rest-and-digest response)
Example: When you see a car coming toward you, the sympathetic system speeds up your heart and prepares you to jump out of the way. After the danger passes, the parasympathetic system calms you down.
How Neurons Work
The basic unit of the nervous system is the neuron (nerve cell). Your body has about 86 billion neurons in the brain alone.

- The neurotransmitters bind to receptors on the next neuron's dendrites.
- This generates a new electrical signal in the receiving neuron.
Common neurotransmitters include dopamine (pleasure and reward), serotonin (mood), and acetylcholine (muscle movement).
Reflexes – Your Body's Quick Reactions
A reflex is an automatic, rapid response to a stimulus that doesn't require thinking. Reflexes protect you from harm.
Example — touching a hot stove:
- Sensory receptors in your hand detect heat.
- A signal travels through a sensory neuron to the spinal cord.
- The spinal cord immediately sends a signal through a motor neuron to your arm muscles.
- Your hand pulls away — before your brain even processes the pain.
This pathway is called a reflex arc. It bypasses the brain to save time, which is why reflexes happen so fast.
