What Is the Solar System?
The solar system is the collection of objects that orbit the Sun, including 8 planets, their moons, dwarf planets, asteroids, comets, and dust. It formed about 4.6 billion years ago from a giant cloud of gas and dust.
The order of planets from the Sun:
Mercury → Venus → Earth → Mars → Jupiter → Saturn → Uranus → Neptune

The Sun – Our Star
The Sun is a medium-sized star at the center of our solar system. It contains about 99.86% of all the mass in the solar system.

The Sun produces energy through nuclear fusion — hydrogen atoms fuse into helium, releasing enormous amounts of energy as light and heat.
The Inner Planets (Rocky Planets)
The four planets closest to the Sun are small, rocky worlds:
Mercury — the smallest planet and closest to the Sun. It has no atmosphere, so temperatures swing from 430°C during the day to -180°C at night. One year on Mercury is just 88 Earth days.
Venus — similar in size to Earth but with a thick, toxic atmosphere of carbon dioxide. Surface temperatures reach 470°C (hotter than Mercury!) due to an extreme greenhouse effect. Venus rotates backward compared to other planets.

Mars — the "Red Planet," colored by iron oxide (rust) on its surface. Mars has the largest volcano in the solar system (Olympus Mons) and evidence of ancient water. It has two small moons: Phobos and Deimos.
The Outer Planets (Gas and Ice Giants)
The four outer planets are much larger and made mostly of gas and ice:
Jupiter — the largest planet, with a mass more than twice all other planets combined. It has at least 95 known moons (including Europa, which may have a subsurface ocean) and a famous storm called the Great Red Spot that has lasted for hundreds of years.
Saturn — famous for its spectacular ring system made of ice and rock particles. Saturn is so light it would float in water (if you had a big enough bathtub). It has 146 known moons, including Titan, which has its own atmosphere.
Uranus — an ice giant that rotates on its side (tilted 98°). It has a faint ring system and 28 known moons. Its blue-green color comes from methane in its atmosphere.
Neptune — the most distant planet, with the strongest winds in the solar system (up to 2,100 km/h). It has 16 known moons, including Triton, which orbits backward and may be a captured dwarf planet.
Dwarf Planets, Asteroids, and Comets
Dwarf planets are round objects that orbit the Sun but haven't "cleared their orbit" of other debris. The most famous is Pluto, which was reclassified from a planet in 2006.
Asteroids are rocky objects mostly found in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. They range from a few meters to hundreds of kilometers across.
Comets are icy bodies from the outer solar system. When they approach the Sun, ice vaporizes and creates a glowing tail that can stretch millions of kilometers.
How Orbits and Gravity Work
All objects in the solar system are held in orbit by the Sun's gravity. Planets don't fly off into space because gravity pulls them toward the Sun, while their forward motion keeps them from falling in — creating a stable orbit.

- Orbits are elliptical (oval-shaped), not perfect circles
- Planets closer to the Sun orbit faster (Mercury: 88 days; Neptune: 165 years)
