    In a hypotonic solution (pure water): Water enters the cell. The cell swells, but the cell wall prevents it from bursting. The cell becomes turgid (firm). This is the ideal state for plant cells — turgor pressure keeps plants upright.

    In a hypertonic solution: Water leaves the cell. The cell membrane pulls away from the cell wall. This is called plasmolysis. The plant wilts.

    In an isotonic solution: No net water movement. Cell is flaccid (limp).

    This is why plants wilt when they don't get enough water!

    Osmosis in Animal Cells

    Animal cells don't have a cell wall, so they're more vulnerable:

    In a hypotonic solution: Water enters the cell. The cell swells and can burst (called lysis).

    In a hypertonic solution: Water leaves the cell. The cell shrivels (called crenation).

    In an isotonic solution: Cell maintains normal shape. This is why IV fluids in hospitals are isotonic saline (0.9% salt).

    1. Salting food for preservation: Salt draws water out of bacteria through osmosis, killing them
