The Human Circulatory System Explained
What Is the Circulatory System?
The circulatory system (also called the cardiovascular system) is your body's transport network. It carries:
- Oxygen from the lungs to the body's cells
- Nutrients from digested food to cells
- Carbon dioxide and waste products away from cells
- Hormones to target organs
- Immune cells to fight infections
The system has three main components: the heart, blood vessels, and blood.
The Heart – Your Body's Pump
The heart is a muscular organ about the size of your fist, located slightly left of center in your chest. It beats approximately 100,000 times per day, pumping about 7,500 liters of blood.
The heart has four chambers:

The left ventricle has the thickest walls because it needs to pump blood the farthest — all the way around your body.
Valves between chambers prevent blood from flowing backward. The "lub-dub" sound of your heartbeat is actually the valves closing.
Blood Vessels: Arteries, Veins, and Capillaries
Blood travels through three types of vessels:
Arteries carry blood away from the heart. They have thick, elastic walls to handle the high pressure of blood being pumped from the heart. The largest artery is the aorta.
Veins carry blood back to the heart. They have thinner walls and contain valves to prevent blood from flowing backward (especially against gravity in your legs). The largest veins are the vena cavae.
Capillaries are the tiniest blood vessels — so small that red blood cells pass through in single file. This is where the actual exchange happens: oxygen and nutrients pass from blood into cells, while carbon dioxide and waste pass from cells into blood.

What Is Blood Made Of?
Blood is a specialized fluid with four main components:
Red blood cells (RBCs) — carry oxygen using a protein called hemoglobin (which gives blood its red color). They are shaped like flattened discs and have no nucleus.
White blood cells (WBCs) — fight infections and disease. They are part of your immune system and can engulf bacteria or produce antibodies.
Platelets — small cell fragments that help blood clot when you get a cut, forming a scab to stop bleeding.
Plasma — the liquid part of blood (about 55%). It carries blood cells, nutrients, hormones, and waste products. Plasma is mostly water.
An average adult has about 5 liters of blood.
Double Circulation
Humans have a double circulatory system, meaning blood passes through the heart twice on each complete circuit:
Circuit 1 — Pulmonary circulation:
- Deoxygenated blood enters the right atrium
- Flows to the right ventricle
- Pumped to the lungs via the pulmonary artery
- In the lungs, carbon dioxide is removed and oxygen is absorbed
- Oxygenated blood returns to the left atrium via the pulmonary veins
Circuit 2 — Systemic circulation:
- Oxygenated blood enters the left atrium
- Flows to the left ventricle
- Pumped to the entire body via the aorta
- Oxygen and nutrients are delivered to cells; waste is collected
- Deoxygenated blood returns to the right atrium via the vena cavae
This double system ensures that oxygenated blood is delivered at high pressure to the body. It works closely with the respiratory system for gas exchange.
